Under the Australian Qualifications Framework, individuals are able to gain nationally recognised qualifications through both 'training and assessment' and 'assessment' only’(or skills assessment) pathways. Whilst participation in training programs are still the most common pathway to gain a national qualification, skills assessment is a credible and cost efficient pathway to a qualification. 
 
The process of Recognition of current Competencies (RCC), also know as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) recognises that not all industry competencies are acquired as a result of completing an accredited course of training.
